Spiritual Life: The Eternal Game - Part IV

Attitudes of the Game

Having the correct attitude towards the game of spiritual ascension is very important. There are several attitudes of those who play the game. All but one actually hinders our progression.

Acquiring and maintaining the correct attitude is essential towards progressing successfully through our present experience and arriving with the proper training and tools to overcome the next level.

The Stagnant Sideliner

This is the attitude of the one who just doesn’t believe in, or wants to actively participate in, the game of spiritual progression. “I don’t wanna play” is the resounding proclamation of this Doubting Thomas. The problem is, there is no choice in the matter.

Forward momentum was established when all things were created and put into motion. Does that mean all souls progress, yes or yes, regardless of whether they actively participate or not? Of course not.

Even though the main current of the river of life is actively flowing towards the source, there are swirling eddies where some get caught and cannot proceed. Once one is stuck in a spiritual eddy, they simply go round and round in the same cycle of existence until something, or someone, breaks them free.

The Lazy Lollygagger

These souls are actively playing the game, but they are not at all serious about it. They go through the motions, give attention to the game, but lack the discipline and wherewithal to make much progress.

Sure, lessons are being learned and some progress is being made, but there is not enough spiritual experience being acquired and not enough of the tools and hidden gifts being found to successfully pass through the next level.

It’s like playing a game of Mario Brothers. There are a variety of hidden items which need to be discovered and held onto in order to be used against the obstacles which arise in progressive levels.

The Lazy Lollygagger doesn’t really take the game seriously and, therefore, is not equipped for forward progression. The next level may be obtained but, because lessons weren’t learned, experience wasn’t gained and items weren’t found in the previous level, they are quickly defeated and hurled back to repeat the previous level.

The Overly Serious Seeker

Then there is the attitude which takes the game too seriously. Although the game of spiritual life is a serious matter, the whole purpose of God creating such a journey for all the little bits of himself/herself is to enjoy the process. It’s the old adage of “stop and smell the roses” along the path to enlightenment.

By focusing too intently on the goal, we often miss those all important blessings that dot our path. These souls fall into a similar pattern as the Lazy Lollygagger, even though the attitude is quite serious toward making progress.

Back to the game of Mario Brothers. If we set our sights too intently on passing through the current level in order to reach the next, we may get there in record time, but we have to redo the previous level because we haven’t acquired the items and experience necessary to overcome the obstacles of the following level.

We’ve rushed through and missed those very important tools, gifts, bonuses and extra power-ups which are critical to confronting the obstacles in the next level and passing through it successfully. I believe that these two attitudes, in particular, are a big factor in why many reincarnate into the same level of existence time and again and don’t progress.

The Passionately Playful Player

This is the attitude which progresses rapidly and successfully through the levels of ascension. These souls love the game, pay attention to the details of the game, explore new paths throughout the current level in order to find the hidden items, and have a lot of fun doing it.

These souls have no doubt. They have discovered that life is eternal and does not end once a level is over, that there is ample assistance along the way, that all necessary resources have been strategically hidden throughout the journey, and that the game was designed to be enjoyed.

These souls have no fear. They eagerly explore new paths, for they know that important pieces of information, experience and powerful items lay hidden along these paths which will help them to successfully advance through the next levels.

These souls don’t let failures get them down. When they take off to explore a new turn in the road and get knocked down by a surprise encounter, or come up empty handed on finding hidden items, they simply chalk it up to experience and proceed to another path.

These souls are serious about progressing, but also embrace the joy of this level of experience. The desire to ascend is forefront in their minds, but it doesn’t blind them to the shear excitement of exploring all that can be explored in this current level.

This is the winning attitude which basically allows one to have their cake and eat it too. Both the individual soul and God are ecstatically happy and are enjoying the spiritual experience together as it was created to be… fun!
